UNC visits Maryland, eyeing 11th straight win

Feb 21, 2009 - 2:11 PM No. 3 North Carolina (24-2) at Maryland (16-9), 3:30 p.m. EST

COLLEGE PARK, Maryland (Ticker) -- North Carolina continues to create distance from itself and the rest of the Atlantic Coast Conference.

The third-ranked Tar Heels go for their 11th straight win when they visit Maryland on Saturday.

North Carolina (24-2, 10-2 ACC) has a 2 1/2 game lead over four teams at 7-4 with just four contests remaining.

The Tar Heels are also vying for the No. 1 spot in the polls after top-ranked Connecticut lost to No. 4 Pittsburgh earlier this week.

Tyler Hansbrough is averaging 21.4 points per game to lead the Tar Heels, who have all five starters scoring in double figures. Ty Lawson is scoring 15.9 per game and Wayne Ellington is third on the team at 15.1 points.

Maryland (16-9, 5-6) has struggled against the upper-echelon of the ACC and is coming off a 93-64 pounding at Clemson on Tuesday.

Greivis Vasquez is averaging 16 points per game to lead the Terrapins, who lost the first meeting with the Tar Heels, 108-91, on February 3.
