Gonzaga shoots for outright WCC title vs. Pepperdine

Feb 21, 2009 - 3:23 PM Pepperdine (8-19) at No. 20 Gonzaga (20-5), 11:30 p.m. EST

SPOKANE, Washington (Ticker) -- Despite clinching yet another West Coast Conference title, coach Mark Few insists Gonzaga still has plenty to play for.

The 20th-ranked Bulldogs aim to win the WCC regular-season crown outright on Saturday when they host lowly Pepperdine.

Steven Gray scored 21 of his career-high 23 points in the second half as Gonzaga (20-5, 11-0 WCC) secured at least a share of its ninth straight WCC regular-season championship with Thursday's 91-54 rout of Loyola Marymount.

The Bulldogs are virtually a lock for the NCAA Tournament, but Few won't ease up on his squad.

"We still have plenty left to accomplish, we want to win the WCC outright and continue to improve our NCAA resume these final weeks," Few said.

Staying undefeated in league play should be no problem for Gonzaga against Pepperdine (8-19, 5-6), which had a three-game winning streak snapped in Thursday's 74-45 rout against Portland.

Dane Suttle Jr. led the way with 13 points for the Waves, who hit only 23 percent (14-of-60) of their shots and were just 2-of-20 from 3-point range.
