LSU looks to claim SEC title against Kentucky

Feb 28, 2009 - 11:07 AM No. 18 Louisiana State (24-4) at Kentucky (19-9) 4:00 p.m. EST

LEXINGTON, Kentucky (Ticker) -- A win away from the Southeastern Conference regular-season crown, No. 18 Louisiana State will look to keep rolling Saturday when it visits Kentucky.

The Tigers (24-4, 12-1 SEC) have won nine straight overall and 12 consecutive conference games since dropping their opener to Alabama on January 11.

In its last contest, LSU stormed ahead with a 14-2 run midway through the second half en route to an 81-75 victory over Florida on Tuesday.

Marcus Thornton had a team-high 32 points, including all eight of his free-throw attempts in the final 2:16 of the contest to ice the win.

Garrett Temple added a season-high 21 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for the Tigers, who also won the SEC regular-season title outright in 2005-06.

Kentucky (19-9, 8-5) is coming off a 77-59 setback at South Carolina, a loss that dealt a serious blow to its NCAA Tournament chances. A win over the Tigers could help the Wildcats get back into consideration.

In the loss to the Gamecocks, Patrick Patterson recorded a double-double with 28 points and 12 rebounds as the Wildcats fell behind, 46-28, at halftime.

Jodie Meeks, who ranks fifth in the country at 25.1 points per game, had 18 points while tying a season-low with 11 field-goal attempts.
