Maryland aims for resume-building win vs. Wake Forest

Mar 3, 2009 - 2:45 PM No. 10 Wake Forest (22-5) at Maryland (18-10), 9:00 p.m. EST

COLLEGE PARK, Maryland (Ticker) -- In the middle of the NCAA Tournament bubble debate, Maryland has one more chance in the regular season to secure a marquee win Tuesday when it hosts No. 10 Wake Forest.

The Terrapins (18-10, 7-7 ACC) used a late spurt to avoid a devastating loss against North Carolina State on Sunday, finishing off a 71-60 victory.

A 12-4 run broke a 52-52 tie as Greivis Vasquez scored over 30 for the second time in three games, registering 33 points on 13-of-23 shooting.

Vazquez, who had a triple-double with 35 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists in a 88-85 overtime win against North Carolina, leads the Terrapins in all three categories. The Venezuelan is averaging 17.1 points, 5.5 rebounds and 4.7 assists per contest.

The Terrapins have wins over Michigan State and the Tar Heels to brag about, but also suffered losses of more than 20 points to Gonzaga and Georgtown while taking a 41-point beatdown in a visit to Duke on January 24.

Wake Forest (22-5, 9-5) has won four of its last five games to bounce back from a 2-5 stretch that spoiled a 16-0 start and its No. 1 ranking.

The Demon Deacons are coming off a 70-60 victory against Virginia thanks to a balanced attack that saw Al-Farouq Aminu, Chas McFarland and Jeff Teague each score 12 points.

Teague is averaging a team-high 19.7 points per game, but has cooled off considerably lately. The sophomore has eclipsed 20 points just twice in his last 10 games after doing so in 10 of the first 17 contests.
