Memphis puts win streak on line at high-scoring Houston

Mar 4, 2009 - 11:18 AM No. 3 Memphis (26-3) at Houston (18-9) 8:00 p.m. EST

HOUSTON (Ticker) -- Third-ranked Memphis is clicking on all cylinders and a meeting with Houston on Wednesday shouldn't slow its momentum.

The Tigers (26-3, 14-0 C-USA) have steamrolled through Conference USA, winning all 14 games against league opponents, including a 58-42 victory over Southern Mississippi on Saturday.

The win was the 20th straight for Memphis, which owns the longest win streak in college basketball this season after eclipsing the 19-game surge put together by Utah State.

Robert Dozier scored 18 points and freshman Tyreke Evans added 14 against Southern Mississippi, leading the Tigers to their 56th straight Conference USA victory.

Despite shooting just under 43 percent (24-of-56) from the floor, Memphis locked down Southern Miss on the defensive end, limiting the Golden Eagles to just 29 percent (15-of-51) shooting.

The Tigers will need another strong defensive effort against Houston (18-9, 9-5), which is averaging a conference-high 77.2 points per game.

After suffering an nine-point loss to Tulsa last Wednesday, the Cougars rebounded on Saturday, forging a 56-51 victory at Rice.
