North Carolina aims for share of conference title

Mar 4, 2009 - 11:19 AM No. 2 North Carolina (25-3) at Virginia Tech (17-11) 7:00 p.m. EST

BLACKSBURG, Virginia (Ticker) -- North Carolina is on the verge of yet another Atlantic Coast Conference regular-season title.

The third-ranked Tar Heels try to move one step closer to the outright conference crown when they visit Virginia Tech on Wednesday.

North Carolina (25-3, 11-3 ACC) owns a one-game lead over arch-rival Duke (25-5, 11-4) atop the league standings and can clinch at least a share of its third straight title with a win over the Hokies. The Tar Heels conclude their regular season Sunday when they host seventh-ranked Duke.

North Carolina looked as if it was going to lock up the championship much earlier after winning 10 straight games following a loss to then-No. 4 Wake Forest on January 11.

However, the Tar Heels' win streak came to a screeching halt when they dropped an 88-85 overtime decision to Maryland on February 21.

Its woes didn't last long as North Carolina got back on track by throttling Georgia Tech, 104-74, at home on Saturday.

Virginia Tech (17-11, 7-7) has lost four of its last five games, including a 72-65 setback to the Blue Devils on Saturday.
