Louisville still aiming for Big East crown

Mar 7, 2009 - 11:14 AM No. 6 Louisville (24-5) at West Virginia (21-9) 9:00 p.m. EST

MORGANTOWN, West Virginia (Ticker) -- Sixth-ranked Louisville needs a win against West Virginia on Saturday and some help to come away with the Big East regular-season title.

The Cardinals (24-5, 15-2 Big East) are tied with No. 1 Connecticut (27-2, 15-2) for the top spot in the conference but lost the lone meeting between the teams' at home on February 2.

With the Huskies owning the tiebreaker, Louisville needs fourth-ranked Pittsburgh to upset Connecticut on Saturday to have a shot at the league crown and the top seed in next week's Big East tournament.

"We have one game to go," Cardinals coach Rick Pitino said. "We could potentially play for the Big East championship on the road. We are very excited about that. We know we have a tough challenge ahead of us and we are looking forward to the remaining games."

Louisville has been red hot of late, winning six straight games, including a 95-78 victory over Seton Hall on Wednesday.

West Virginia (21-9, 10-7) is coming off back-to-back wins after forging an 82-63 drubbing against DePaul on Wednesday.
