UNC women topple Wake Forest
Jan 21, 2011 - 2:15 AM Chapel Hill, NC (Sports Network) - Laura Broomfield led the way with 19 points and 11 rebounds, as 10th-ranked North Carolina defeated Wake Forest, 71-56, at Carmichael Arena.Italee Lucas scored 20 points for the Tar Heels (17-2, 3-1 ACC), who have won three of their last four games and will visit Maryland on Sunday.
Chelsea Douglas netted 16 points for Wake Forest (10-10, 1-3), which has now dropped six straight road games. Brooke Thomas posted 10 points while Secily Ray hauled in 11 rebounds in the losing effort.
The Tar Heels were in control from the start and after Lucas hit a three- pointer near the midpoint of the first half, UNC led 20-9. From there, the hosts went on a 16-7 run -- capped by Broomfield's jumper -- and led by 20, 36-16, with 3:41 to play.
UNC led 36-22 at the break and was never threatened in the second half.
