Lady Gamecocks fly past Eagles to the Second Round

Mar 17, 2012 - 7:34 PM West Lafayette, IN (Sports Network) - Markeshia Grant scored a team-high 12 points to lead the fifth-seeded South Carolina Lady Gamecocks to an 80-48 victory over the 12th-seeded Eastern Michigan Eagles in their first round matchup of the 2012 Women's NCAA Tournament at Mackey Arena.

Charenee Stephens added 11 points for South Carolina (24-9) while Ashley Bruner scored 10 points and grabbed seven rebounds. La'Keisha Sutton dished out six assists as 12 different Lady Gamecocks managed to score.

Paige Redditt paced the Eagles (23-9) with 14 points. Tavelyn James added 11 points while Natachia Watkins recorded a double-double of 10 points and 12 rebounds. EMU had won 11 of its last 12 coming into the tourney.

The Lady Gamecocks went on a 14-2 run to end the first half and attain a 39-23 halftime lead. South Carolina shot 50 percent from the floor in the opening period.

South Carolina extended its lead in the second half by shooting 56.7 percent from the field. The Eagles made just 20.7 percent of their field goal attempts after the break.

South Carolina will advance to take on the No. 4 seed, Purdue.
