Lady Gamecocks top Purdue in second round bout
Mar 20, 2012 - 3:05 AM West Lafayette, IN (Sports Network) - Markeshia Grant led the way with 21 points as the fifth-seeded South Carolina Lady Gamecocks defeated the fourth- seeded Purdue Boilermakers, 72-61, in the second round of the 2012 NCAA Women's Tournament at Mackey Arena.Ieasia Walker contributed 17 points and six rebounds for South Carolina (25-9), while La'Keisha Sutton and Ashley Bruner added 10 points apiece.
KK Houser led Purdue (25-9) with 15 points and Brittany Rayburn chipped in 13 points. Sam Ostarello grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds in the losing effort.
South Carolina took a 33-26 lead into the intermission after it shot 45.2 percent from the floor in the opening period. The Boilermakers trailed despite shooting 55.6 percent from the field because they attempted 13 less field goals in the first half.
The Lady Gamecocks extended their advantage after the break by connecting on 53.8 percent of their field goal attempts in the final 20 minutes.
South Carolina scored 23 points off of Purdue's 20 turnovers.
The Lady Gamecocks advance to the Sweet 16 with the victory, where they will face the top-seeded Stanford Cardinal.
