Ogwumike, No. 4 Stanford handles UCLA
Jan 25, 2014 - 6:26 AM Stanford, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Chiney Ogwumike led the No. 4 Stanford Cardinal with 21 points and 15 rebounds in a 72-55 victory over the UCLA Bruins at Maples Pavillion.Ogwumike had her double-double on 10-of-18 shooting and Lili Thompson added 15 points. Erica McCall scored 12 points with eight boards and Amber Orrange had eight assists in Stanford's (18-1, 7-0 Pac-12) 17th straight victory over UCLA (10-10, 4-4).
Atonye Nyingifa paced UCLA with 18 points and eight rebounds, while Nirra Fields scored 13 points for the Bruins, who won three of their last four entering the contest.
Stanford took a 27-19 lead thanks to a nine-point spurt that contained a triple from Thompson and a layup from Sara James that capped off the run at 5:30 in the first half.
With under two minutes left in the first half, Madeline Brooks hit a three and Nyingifa scored on a layup to bring UCLA within one heading into the break.
James hit back-to-back 3's for Stanford early in the second half to break the tie and give the Cardinal a 45-39 lead. UCLA never got close again.
Stanford's lead swelled to 17 points after Taylor Greenfield's layup made it 70-53 with 1:51 remaining.
