No. 22 Arizona State women top No. 10 Florida State 68-56

Dec 22, 2015 - 1:55 AM TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) Arizona State billed its Monday matinee as Snow Day.

Arnecia Hawkins melted it.

Hawkins hit all seven of her shots, including three 3-pointers, for a career-high 23 points and No. 23 Arizona State found its shooting touch in the second half to defeat No. 10 Florida State 68-56.

''(Hawkins) is just completely on fire. I think she's 19 for 25 the last four games,'' Sun Devils coach Charli Turner Thorne said. ''That's a huge boost to have that other perimeter threat. ... I can't say enough about her.''

Quinn Dornstauder added 11 points, and Sophie Brunner and Elisha Davis had 10 each for the Sun Devils (8-3), who shot 65 percent in the second half, including three straight 3-pointers midway through the fourth quarter.

But it was Hawkins who carried the load with 15 points in the second half.

''She's always had instant offense ... the thing that hasn't always been there is the defensive end,'' Turner Thorne said. ''She's rebounding well, she's playing great defense, on ball, off ball. She's been one of our top scorers. It's really clicking for her.''

Arizona State, which used a 12-0 run in the third to take control, made 15 of 23 shots, including 6 of 9 from 3-point range, and was perfect on seven free throw attempts in the second half.

Florida State (9-3) was led by Brittany Brown with 17 points and Emiah Bingley with 15. The Seminoles had 16 turnovers, eight in the third quarter when they were outscored 19-9 - a season-low for points scored in a quarter. Brown had six assists and five steals.

''I feel like we got our mojo back,'' Turner Thorne said. ''We really put it all together today against a very good Florida State team. We executed our defensive game plan to a T. We didn't let their posts get going. So that was really fun.''

Florida State had an early seven point lead as Arizona State started 1 for 11 but the Sun Devils hit 8 of 15 in the second quarter to pull within 26-25 at the half.

Adut Bulgak's layup at the 6:39 mark of the third quarter put Florida State on top 33-32 but the Seminoles had a drought just shy of six minutes. Sabrina Haines put ASU back on top with a 3-pointer and Brunner capped the deciding run with a 3-point play at 1:35 for a 44-33 lead.

''They were great (defensively),'' FSU coach Sue Semrau said. ''They did a tremendous job. We didn't have an answer for their pressure and we didn't defend. That's what was most disappointing.

''The foul trouble really hurt us in the first half and we let us affect us coming out in the third quarter.''

Bingley's 3-point play at 6:14 of the fourth quarter drew Florida State within 46-41 but Hawkins sandwiched 3s around Davis' 3 on consecutive possessions that started ASU on a streak of seven-straight baskets to end the game.

The Sun Devils finished at 49 percent, making 7 of 15 3s, and were 13 of 16 from the foul line. Florida State finished at 40 percent from the field but only made 7 of 13 from the foul line.

''I thought we adjusted well offensively. We kind of started a little shaky and kind of settled down,'' Turner Thorne said. ''We've been shooting the ball well in the last 3 games in a row. This is the fourth game in a row. ''

Florida State: Ivy Slaughter fouled out with 7:43 to play, the first Seminole to be disqualified this year. She averages more than eight points but was scoreless. ... The Seminoles beat Arizona State in the Sweet 16 last year, 66-65. ... Since Sue Semrau became coach in 1997, FSU has only faced ASU, Stanford and Washington from the Pac 12. ... In its previous four games, FSU outscored its opponents 87-17 in second-chance points.

Arizona State: This was the fourth game against a ranked team for the Sun Devils. They won at No. 19 Syracuse and lost by two to No. 18 Kentucky and No. 2 South Carolina. ... After one more nonconference game, Arizona State opens Pac 12 play at home against California and Stanford, both ranked.
