Carson scores 21 as Rutgers beats Michigan State

Jan 29, 2007 - 2:08 AM PISCATAWAY, New Jersey (Ticker) -- Essence Carson scored seven of her 21 points in the final 2 1/2 minutes to lift Rutgers to a 63-57 win over No. 21 Michigan State.

Matee Ajavon scored 14 points and Kia Vaughn grabbed 14 rebounds for the Scarlet Knights (12-6), who won for the seventh time in eight games.

After sitting for three minutes with foul trouble, Carson returned with six minutes left in the game and Rutgers trailing, 55-51.

She converted a follow shot then hit a 3-pointer to give Rutgers a 57-54 lead with 1:57 left. The Scarlet Knights sealed the win at the free-throw line, as Epiphanny Prince, Carson and Ajavon each hit both ends of one-and-ones in the final 32 seconds.

Victoria Lucas-Perry had 13 points and freshman Allyssa DeHaan added 12 and four blocked shots for Michigan State (15-6), which lost its second straight game to an unranked opponent.
