Michigan State squeaks out dramatic win over Purdue

Feb 12, 2007 - 12:56 AM WEST LAFAYETTE, Indiana (Ticker) -- Mia Johnson made a game-winning 3-pointer with 1.3 seconds remaining to lift No. 24 Michigan State to a 54-52 Big Ten Conference victory over 13th-ranked Purdue.

Aisha Jefferson led the Spartans (20-5, 9-3 Big Ten) with 15 points and 12 rebounds to help her team overcome a 12-point deficit in the first half by outscoring the Boilermakers after intermission, 31-17.

Despite taking a 51-46 lead on a free throw by Johnson with 2:18 left, Michigan State saw Purdue charge back, going in front, 52-51, on a jumper by Lindsey Wisdom-Hylton with 23 seconds left.

Wisdom-Hylton had a chance to put the Boilermakers ahead further, but missed the front end of a 1-and-1 with 10 seconds left and the Spartans raced down to set up the winning shot for Johnson.

Rene Haynes scored 11 points and Johnson added 10 for Michigan State, which held Purdue without a field goal for nearly a nine-minute stretch in the second half.

Wisdom-Hylton scored 15 points and Jodi Howell had 12 for the Boilermakers (21-5, 10-2 Big Ten), who were outrebounded, 47-34, and shot just 5-of-20 (25 percent) on 3-pointers.
