Stanford holds off Arizona State for Pac-10 title
Mar 6, 2007 - 6:38 AM SAN JOSE, California (Ticker) -- Candice Wiggins scored 20 points and No. 8 Stanford built a big first-half lead and held on for a 62-55 victory over No. 7 Arizona State in the Pac-10 Conference Tournament title game.Jayne Appel scored 17 points and grabbed 15 rebounds off the bench for the Cardinal (28-4), who led 34-19 at the break but shot just 29 percent (8-of-28) in the second half and had to withstand a rally by the Sun Devils (28-4).
Brooke Smith scored 11 points and Jillian Harmon added 10 for Stanford, which earned the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament and hosts first- and second-round games on March 17 and 19.
Emily Westerberg scored 12 points and Briann January had 11 for Arizona State.
The Sun Devils shot 28 percent (8-of-29) in the first half and could never recover. They were outrebounded 45-32 in losing for the seventh time in eight meetings with the Cardinal.
