Smith, Duke women upset Maryland, advance to ACC finals

Mar 9, 2008 - 12:20 AM GREENSBORO, North Carolina (Ticker) -- Wanisha Smith chipped in 22 points to lead 11th-ranked Duke to a 74-63 upset victory over No. 4 Maryland on Saturday in the Atlantic Coast Conference semifinals.

Joy Cheek scored 16 points, grabbed eight rebounds and made five steals for the Blue Devils (23-8), who will face second-ranked North Carolina in the final of the tournament.

Duke was outrebounded, 40-34, but forced 19 turnovers and shot 45 percent (29-of-64) from the field.

Marissa Coleman finished with 20 points, Crystal Langhorne had 16 and 11 rebounds and Laura Harper added 12 and 12 for the Terrapins (30-3), who made just 3-of-20 shots from the arc in having their eight-game winning streak snapped.
