Duke rides defense to rout of SMU
Dec 21, 2006 - 5:06 AM CANCUN, Mexico (Ticker) -- Defense helped Duke keep a streak alive.Abby Waner and Carrem Gay scored 12 points apiece to lift fourth-ranked Duke to a 75-45 victory over SMU in the Caribbean Classic.
The Blue Devils improved to 11-0 for the third time under coach Gail Goestenkors and extended their December winning streak to 32 straight games.
Duke's defense, anchored by 6-7 center, Alison Bales, stifled SMU. Bales scored 10 points, grabbed nine rebounds and blocked four shots.
The Mustangs (7-4) shot just 16 percent (6-of-38) in the opening half and finished the game 0-of-12 from 3-point range. They were held to a season-low total in trailing, 35-17, at halftime.
Joy Cheek came off the bench to supply five points and 10 rebounds for Duke, which outrebounded SMU, 54-39.
The Blue Devils will face No. 22 Pittsburgh in the final game of the tournament on Thursday.
