Quick start leads Marquette to 13th straight win

Jan 4, 2007 - 10:24 AM MILWAUKEE (Ticker) -- Syracuse found out early it would not be pulling off an upset.

Krystal Ellis scored 19 points and Christina Quaye added 16 as No. 20 Marquette opened the game with a strong run and cruised to a 79-55 triumph over Syracuse in a Big East Conference matchup.

Scoring the contest's first 11 points, Marquette (14-1, 2-0 Big East) rolled to a 41-18 lead at the break. Syracuse missed its first six shots before freshman Nicole Michael - who scored half the team's first-half points - connected more than six minutes into the game.

The Orange (7-8, 1-1) drew within 16-8 before a 17-4 run gave the Golden Eagles a commanding advantage.

Syracuse shot just 29.2 percent (7-of-24) and committed 14 of its 22 turnovers in the first half.

Efueko Osagie-Landry had nine points and a season-best eight rebounds for Marquette, which tied a school record with its 13th straight victory.

Michael notched her sixth 20-point game of the season with 21 and Vaida Sipaviciute reached double figures for the 12th consecutive time with a season-high 19 for Syracuse, which failed to receive a point from its bench.
