No. 14 Virginia holds off Purdue 56-49

Dec 4, 2009 - 3:20 AM CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.(AP) -- Ariana Moorer scored 11 points and fellow reserve Lexie Gerson had 11 to help No. 14 Virginia overcome its poor shooting in a 56-49 victory over Purdue in an ACC/Big Ten Challenge game Thursday night.

Monica Wright had seven points in just 17 minutes before fouling out with 6:12 left for the Cavaliers (6-1), who closed the game with an 8-2 run. Virginia shot just 18 for 67 (27 percent) from the field, including 4 for 23 on 3-pointers.

Brittany Rayburn scored 15 of her 19 points in the second half for Purdue (3-4), which rallied from a 12-point deficit to take a lead with 10:13 left. Rayburn was 11 for 11 on free throws.

The Boliermakers, who trailed 26-14 at the break, finished 15 for 38 from the field.
