Sweat scores 31 as K-State beats No. 22 Iowa State
Jan 31, 2010 - 11:07 PM MANHATTAN, Kan.(AP) -- Maybe a week off was all Kansas State needed.Ashley Sweat scored 31 points and the Wildcats snapped a three-game losing streak with a 73-67 win over No. 22 Iowa State on Sunday.
It was the Wildcats' second win over a ranked opponent in four tries this season and kept Iowa State winless in Manhattan since the 2006-07 season. It also put an end to the Cyclones' four-game winning streak, which included victories over No. 20 Texas and No. 11 Oklahoma.
"I'm so proud of everybody on the team," Sweat said. "It's huge for our team, especially with a quality team like Iowa State. So much credit goes to our coaches preparing us well this week. I felt like on offense, all of us being in rhythm together helped me get good shots.
"That's a testament to how well we played together tonight."
Brittany Chambers added 14 points and Taelor Karr 12 for Kansas State (11-9, 3-3 Big 12), which was coming off an eight-day break.
Kelsey Bolte scored 19 points and Alison Lacey had 13 to lead Iowa State (16-4, 4-3). Anna Prins and Denae Stuckey added 10 points each.
"We've had trouble coming here and playing the last few years," Bolte said. "It's a tough place to play."
Neither team could establish an advantage in the opening period, which included seven ties. A basket by Branshea Brown with 14:47 remaining sparked a 9-2 run that gave Kansas State a 15-10 lead, but Iowa State clawed back to even the score at 21-21.
A 3-pointer by Sweat gave the Wildcats a four-point lead with 11 seconds left in the half, but Iowa State's Jessica Schroll connected on a jumper as time expired to make it 29-27.
The Wildcats were able to gain control of the game in the second half, using an 11-4 run to push their lead to nine midway through the period. They also buckled down defensively, forcing a scoring drought of nearly 5 minutes that helped them pull away.
"K-State does a great job of running their offense to the end of the clock," Iowa State coach Bill Fennelly said. "You win games by finishing plays and doing things at both ends of the floor. Defensively today, we were not very good."
Iowa State eventually put together a 9-3 run to keep the game close, and got within two on a 3-pointer by Stuckey. Kansas State responded with a 10-3 run to extinguish the comeback attempt, and some late free throws solidified the win.
"Ashley was just phenomenal tonight," Patterson said. "She had an opportunity to be the best she can be because the people around her were playing well, and with purpose.
"Kari Kincaid really played great tonight, and it would be very easy to miss what she did and what she brought to the floor. There's no question in my mind she is one of the top three players in this league. Shes just special."
