Ajavon lifts Rutgers into Big East semis

Mar 5, 2007 - 2:11 AM HARTFORD, Connecticut (Ticker) -- Matee Ajavon scored 21 points and had five assists as No. 21 Rutgers survived the Big East Conference quarterfinals with a 63-55 come-from-behind victory over DePaul.

Rutgers (20-8) will face either Marquette or Pittsburgh in the semifinals on Monday.

The Scarlet Knights trailed, 32-28, at intermission, but shot an impressive 60 percent (12-20) after the break.

Ajavon went 7-of-11 from the floor and had four steals for Rutgers, which forced 25 turnovers, leading to 27 points.

Essence Carson collected 18 points and three blocks for the Scarlet Knights, who shot 50 percent (23-of-46) overall.

Missy Mitidiero led the Demons (19-12) with 14 points on 5-of-7 shooting.

Caprice Smith scored 11 points and grabbed 12 rebounds for DePaul, which shot a dismal 25 percent (8-of-32) in the second half.
