Middle Tennessee claims 26th straight win, Sun Belt title
Mar 6, 2007 - 11:49 PM LAFAYETTE, Louisiana (Ticker) -- Middle Tennessee just might be the hottest team going into the women's NCAA Tournament.Chrissy Givens scored 33 points as the Blue Raiders captured their 26th consecutive win and an automatic bid in the NCAA Tournament with a 77-67 victory over Louisiana-Lafayette in the Sun Belt Conference championship.
Givens shot 13-of-23 from the field, grabbed five rebounds and collected three steals as her team extended the nation's longest winning streak.
Amber Holt scored 20 points and Johnna Abney added 12 for Middle Tennessee State (29-3), which claimed its fourth straight league tournament title with its 13th consecutive victory in the event.
The Blue Raiders held a 39-29 lead after shooting 46 percent (29-of-64) in the first half. Overall, they finished with 28 points off 24 turnovers by the Ragin' Cajuns (25-8).
Yolanda Jones had 19 points and 13 rebounds for tourney hosts Louisiana-Lafayette, which dropped both meetings with Middle Tennessee State by a combined 37 points.
