Charles, Thomas help Connecticut edge Wisconsin-Green Bay

Mar 21, 2007 - 5:16 AM HARTFORD, Connecticut (Ticker) -- Connecticut coach Geno Auriemma must have delivered a great speech at intermission.

Tina Charles had 22 points and seven rebounds and Mel Thomas scored 21 as the top-seeded Huskies posted a 94-70 victory over ninth seed Wisconsin-Green Bay in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

Kalana Greene had 16 points and nine boards and Charde Houston and Renee Montgomery also scored 16 for Connecticut (31-3), which will face North Carolina State in the semifinal of the Fresno Region on Saturday.

The loss also snapped Wisconsin-Green Bay's 26-game winning streak - the longest streak in the nation.

In the first half, Wisconsin-Green Bay (29-4) shot 44 percent (15-of-34) from the field en route to opening a 40-38 advantage at halftime.

However, the Huskies turned things around after the break with an impressive 24-10 surge to begin the second stanza and grab a 62-50 lead at the 13:58 mark, capped by Houston's layup.

Thomas netted five points during a 12-2 burst as Connecticut pushed its advantage to 88-66 with 4:51 remaining.

Natalie Berglin scored 28 points and Nicole Soulis added 14 for the Phoenix, who shot 42 percent (27-of-64) and were outscored 46-24 in points in the paint.
