Vaughn, defense lead Rutgers past Michigan State

Mar 21, 2007 - 6:29 AM EAST LANSING, Michigan (Ticker) -- Kia Vaughn scored 16 points and fourth-seeded Rutgers used an harassing defense to pull out a 70-57 victory over Michigan State in a second-round Greensboro Region contest.

Essence Carson scored 15 points and Epiphanny Prince added 14 for the Scarlet Knights, who advanced to the region semifinal against top-ranked Duke on Monday.

Rutgers held fifth-seeded Michigan State to just under 28 percent shooting (8-of-29)in the first half in building a 32-25 edge. It connected on all five 3-point shots in the second half to pull away.

Brittany Ray came off the bench and sank 3-of-5 shots from the arc and scored nine points for the Scarlet Knights (24-8), who were 8-of-15 on 3-pointers.

Victoria Lucas-Perry had 17 points and 10 rebounds for the Spartans (24-9), who shot 32 percent (17-of-53) for the game and committed 17 turnovers.
