Gonzaga's Vandersloot makes history as Bulldogs advance
Mar 22, 2011 - 5:24 AM Spokane, WA (Sports Network) - Courtney Vandersloot delivered 29 points and an incredible 17 assists as the 11th-seeded Gonzaga Bulldogs topped third-seeded UCLA, 89-75, in second-round action of the NCAA Tournament at the McCarthey Athletic Center.Vandersloot, who added seven rebounds and five steals and came up one assist shy of tying the NCAA Tournament single-game record, became the first player, man or woman, in NCAA Division I history to record 2,000 points and 1,000 assists in a career as she guided the Bulldogs (30-4) to the regional semifinals for the second straight year.
Also having a huge game for the Bulldogs was Kayla Standish who hit on 11- of-14 shots from the floor and all seven of his free-throw attempts to tally a game-high 30 points to go along with his 10 rebounds. Katelan Redmon contributed 15 points for Gonzaga.
The Bruins (28-5) were led by Darxia Morris who dropped in 20 points, Jasmine Dixon 18 and 10 rebounds and Rebekah Gardner 14 points off the bench.
Both teams shot the ball well from the floor in the first half, but with just 1-of-5 accuracy behind the three-point line in the period the Bulldogs found themselves trailing by three points at the break, 38-35.
In the second half Gonzaga lit up the scoreboard with 64 percent shooting from the field and also made good on 19-of-22 at the free-throw line in order to secure the double-digit win.
Gonzaga, which suffered 16 turnovers, managed to make up for the miscues by holding a 27-15 scoring advantage at the charity stripe.
The Bulldogs, who became the first team this season to score at least 80 points against UCLA in regulation, are into the next round on Saturday where the squad will face off against the winner of the Louisville/Xavier battle.
