UConn fights past Georgetown to reach Elite Eight
Mar 27, 2011 - 8:42 PM Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - Maya Moore scored 23 points and grabbed 14 rebounds, leading Connecticut to a 68-63 come-from-behind victory over Big East rival Georgetown in the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Women's Tournament. The Huskies trailed 53-46 with 9 1/2 minutes left in the contest, but erupted for 17 of the next 19 points. Bria Hartley ignited the burst with a three- pointer, then tied the game at 53-53 with a layup before Lorin Dixon put UConn ahead for good with a steal and a basket.
Moore took over from there, scoring five of the next eight Connecticut points, and her free throw with 3:07 remaining gave the Huskies a 63-55 advantage.
Georgetown didn't roll over and pulled within 65-61 on a three-pointer by Monica McNutt with 1:44 to play. After a trade of baskets left the score 67-63, UConn turned the ball over with 19 seconds left. Sugar Rodgers had a chance to make it a one-point game, but her three-point try rimmed out with 14 seconds remaining and Moore made one free throw at the other end to seal it.
Hartley added 17 points for Connecticut (35-1), which is trying for its third straight national championship and will face the Duke Blue Devils in the Philadelphia Regional final on Tuesday.
McNutt scored 17 points for Georgetown (24-11), which was playing UConn for the third time in a month. The Hoyas dropped a 52-42 home decision on February 26 and suffered a 59-43 setback on March 6 in the quarterfinals of the Big East Tournament.
