Indiana fires women's coach Legette-Jack

Mar 12, 2012 - 8:59 PM Bloomington, IN (Sports Network) - Indiana fired head women's basketball coach Felisha Legette-Jack following a 6-24 season, saying Monday that she was "no longer in a position to turn the program around."

Legette-Jack spent six seasons as Indiana's coach and compiled a winning record in the first three. In the third season, her team tied the school record for consecutive wins (nine) and totaled 21 victories for only the fourth time in program history.

But each of her last three seasons ended with losing records overall and in the Big Ten. The Hoosiers were just 1-15 in the conference this past season.

"After a deliberate and thorough review of all aspects of the women's basketball program, including meeting with Felisha and interviews with all current players, I have concluded that under the current circumstances Felisha is no longer in a position to turn the program around," Indiana vice president and athletic director Fred Glass said in a statement.

"Delaying the inevitable isn't fair to her, the program and its fans, and most importantly the student-athletes on this team.

"Felisha is a wonderful person who did many good things for our program, the university and the wider community. We all wish her much success in her future endeavors."

Legette-Jack had received a two-year contract extension last year "in the belief that such support would help her get the program going in the right direction again," Glass said.

"In retrospect, I was wrong," said Glass. "However, I am not going to compound that mistake by refusing to make the decision that now needs to be made."

The search for a new coach is already underway, the school said.
