Kentucky holds on against 15th-seeded McNeese State

Mar 18, 2012 - 12:54 AM Ames, IA (Sports Network) - Despite shooting just 39.7 percent from the field, the second-seeded Kentucky Wildcats outlasted the 15th-seeded McNeese State Cowgirls 68-62 in the first round of the NCAA Women's Tournament at James H. Hilton Coliseum.

Keyla Snowden scored 11 points for Kentucky (26-6), while Azia Bishop netted 10 points and Samarie Walker grabbed 13 rebounds.

For McNeese State (26-8), Caitlyn Baggett poured in 22 points and Martika Hull tallied 20 points and 13 rebounds, but the rest of the Cowgirls combined for just 20 points total.

Kentucky led by nine early on in the first half, but McNeese State ripped off a 14-2 run to take a four-point lead with 4:13 remaining. The Wildcats answered with an 8-1 run of their own to take a 31-28 lead into halftime.

The Cowgirls kept the deficit to within single-digits for most of the second half, but they could never retake the lead.

The Wildcats hope to tighten up their play in their next game, as they committed 20 turnovers and connected on just 2-of-17 from three-point range.

Kentucky advances to the second round, where it will face seventh-seeded Green Bay.
