Ogwumike, Stanford take down USC
Jan 21, 2013 - 2:59 AM Stanford, CA (Sports Network) - Chiney Ogwumike scored 29 points to go with 16 rebounds and No. 6 Stanford held off Southern California, 75-66, on Sunday.Joslyn Tinkle followed with 15 points and seven boards, while Sara James and Amber Orrange each poured in 13 for the Cardinal (16-2, 5-1 Pac 12), who have won five of their last six.
After winning four straight, the Trojans (7-10, 4-2) have dropped back-to-back games. Cassie Harberts led USC with 21 points and seven rebounds while Ariya Crook contributed 18 points off the bench in the defeat.
With just over five minutes left in the first half, the Cardinal led by just two points, however they finished the stanza on 13-2 run to take a 33-20 lead into the break.
During the stretch, Tinkle and James went back-to-back from long distance before Tinkle buried another 3-pointer just before the end of the period.
Stanford broke the game open by starting the second half on a 10-4 run, taking a 43-24 lead following two scores by Orrange.
From there, the Cardinal led by double-digits until a late surge by the Trojans brought them within nine with 4:20 left in the game.
Crook made a layup less than two minutes later to pull USC within 66-61, but Stanford answered with a 7-2 push to put the game out of reach.
