Mathies and O'Neill help Kentucky edge Tennessee
Mar 3, 2013 - 11:59 PM Lexington, KY (Sports Network) - A'dia Mathies and Jennifer O'Neill scored 16 points apiece as 10th-ranked Kentucky took down No. 8 Tennessee, 78-65, on Sunday at Memorial Coliseum.DeNesha Stallworth and Bria Gross each added 12 points, with Stallworth also hauling in eight rebounds in the triumph for Kentucky (25-4, 13-3 SEC), which made Matthew Mitchell the all-time winningest head coach in the program's history.
His 139th coaching victory at the school broke Terry Hall's record set between 1980-87.
Meighan Simmons tallied 17 points and seven rebounds, while Cierra Burdick contributed a double-double with 11 points and 11 boards for Tennessee (23-6), which saw its six-game winning streak come to an end.
Bashaara Graves and Taber Spani had 12 and 11 points, respectively, in the setback. Both teams had already clinched first round byes in the upcoming conference tournament.
Kentucky led by as many as 13 in the first half, but Tennessee was able to trim its deficit to 36-32 by halftime.
However, the Lady Volunteers shot just 37 percent over the final 20 minutes and the Wildcats began the second half on a 9-0 run to seize control.
