No. 9 Kentucky upset by Alabama
Jan 24, 2014 - 3:47 AM Lexington, KY (SportsNetwork.com) - Daisha Simmons drove down the left side of the lane and banked in a layup to score the final points in Alabama's 57-55 upset win over ninth-ranked Kentucky at Memorial Coliseum.Simmons poured in 21 points while Briana Hutchen scored 10 points and had seven boards for the Crimson Tide (9-10, 2-4 SEC), who snapped a two-game skid.
Samarie Walker netted 18 and had seven rebounds and Bria Goss scored 14 and grabbed six boards for Kentucky (15-4, 3-3), which has lost three of its last five.
Jennifer O'Neill made a pair from the charity stripe to tie the game at 55 apiece with 12.9 seconds left to play before the Simmons layup.
Walker scored the first 10 points of a 12-4 run for the Wildcats before Goss capped it off with a layup with 14:33 left in the game. The run gave Kentucky a 39-31 advantage, but Alabama went on a 20-7 tear to take a, 51-46, lead with 5:58 to play.
The Wildcats chipped away at the lead in the final five minutes before eventually knotting the score on O'Neill's free throws.
The first 20 minutes featured seven ties and three lead changes and the largest lead came with 6:48 left, when the Crimson Tide led by five, 18-13. The game was knotted at 27 apiece at the halfway point.
