Rutgers holds off Marquette

Jan 9, 2008 - 5:19 AM MILWAUKEE (Ticker) -- Essence Carson and Epiphanny Prince scored 17 points apiece to lead No. 5 Rutgers to a 67-63 victory over Marquette in a Big East Conference matchup Tuesday.

Matee Ajavon added 14 points, six rebounds and six assists for the Scarlet Knights (12-2, 2-0 Big East), who survived their third straight close call to extend their winning streak to seven games.

Krystal Ellis scored 15 points, including a layup to give the Golden Eagles (9-6, 1-1) a 61-58 lead with 6:25 to play.

Rutgers, however, held Marquette scoreless the rest of the way, and Prince hit five free throws to reclaim the lead for good.
