Neal, Colorado St. capture unlikely win over Utah

Mar 13, 2008 - 3:53 AM SALT LAKE CITY (Ticker) -- Emily Neal scored 12 points in the second half as Colorado State recorded one of the biggest upsets in women's college basketball.

Neal finished with 17 points as the ninth-seeded Rams shocked top seed Utah, 60-52, in the quarterfinals of the Mountain West tournament on Wednesday.

After going winless in the MWC during the regular season, Colorado State (4-27) strung together consecutive wins for the first time this season, with the second coming against a Utah team that went undefeated in league play.

However, the Rams came close to upsetting the Utes (27-4) on March 5, dropping a 63-58 decision at home.

Colorado State made the most of a second opportunity after routing Nevada-Las Vegas, 68-49, in a play-in game on Tuesday that snapped its 20-game losing streak. The Rams outrebounded the Utes, 42-30, and held the top seed to just 29 percent (17-of-58) shooting.

Sara Hunter scored 14 points and Amaka Uzomah added eight and 14 rebounds for Colorado State, which snapped Utah's 22-game winning streak.

Leilani Mitchell had 19 points and seven assists for the Utes, who went 6-of-28 from the field in the second half, including 3-of-17 on 3-pointers.
