Rutgers edges George Washington, sets up meeting with UConn

Mar 30, 2008 - 10:17 PM GREENSBORO, North Carolina (Ticker) -- Essence Carson scored 25 points as second-seeded Rutgers held off a pesky George Washington squad for a 53-42 victory in the semifinals of the Greensboro Regional on Sunday.

Epiphanny Prince had 12 points and seven rebounds for the Scarlet Knights (27-6), who advanced to face bitter Big East rival Connecticut in the final on Tuesday. Rutgers reached its first national title game last season, losing to Tennessee.

Although they held a comfortable 28-16 lead at the half, the Scarlet Knights saw their cushion sliced to 33-30 with 14:18 to go after a jumper by Antella Parrish capped a 10-0 run.

Rutgers came back with 9-2 run, but had to once again shake George Washington after the Colonials got within 46-42 with 3:40 left. Carson completed a three-point play and added four free throws down the stretch.

Jessica Adair scored 16 points and Sarah-Jo Lawrence added 10 for the sixth-seeded Colonials (27-7), who struggled from long range, going 2-of-17 on 3-pointers.
