Waner, Bales lead Duke past Penn State

Nov 22, 2006 - 3:40 AM DURHAM, North Carolina (Ticker) -- Duke ended Penn State's winning streak in convincing style.

Abby Waner scored 16 points and Alison Bales blocked nine shots to lead the fifth-ranked Blue Devils to a 70-42 romp over the Lady Lions, who had won their first four games.

With the exception of Waner, Duke (4-0) did not shoot particularly well, making just 1-of-13 shots from the arc. But with the 6-7 Bales anchoring the defense, Penn State was limited to 30 percent shooting (18-of-60), committed 23 turnovers and was outscored in the paint, 40-20.

Bales moved into third place on the Atlantic Coast Conference's all-time blocked shots list as Duke swatted aside 12 shots.

Lindsay Harding scored 11 points with six assists, five rebounds and two steals for the Blue Devils, who held a 37-25 halftime lead and pulled away in the second half.

Mashea Williams scored 12 points for Penn State (4-1).
