Latta, Larkins power North Carolina romp
Nov 26, 2006 - 5:44 AM HONOLULU (Ticker) -- North Carolina's women managed with ease what the men's team failed to accomplish.Ivory Latta scored 20 points and Erlana Larkins added 19 to lead the second-ranked Tar Heels to a 101-63 romp over Gonzaga in the semifinals of the Rainbow Wahine Classic.
On Wednesday, the North Carolina men, also ranked second in the nation, were upset by Gonzaga in the NIT Season Tip-Off at Madison Square Garden.
The women had no such problems, jumping out to a 55-30 halftime lead.
The Tar Heels (5-0) put on a magnificent shooting display, hitting 59 percent (38-of-65) from the field and connecting on 14-of-26 3-pointers. That more than helped offset 30 turnovers.
Jessica Breland scored 13 points and Camille Little and Heather Claytor added 12 apiece for North Carolina.
Jami Bjorklund scored 21 points on 8-for-15 shooting for the Bulldogs (5-2), who shot just 39 percent (24-of-61).
