Carey's 4 TDs help Arizona down No. 18 Oklahoma State
Sep 9, 2012 - 7:02 AM Tucson, AZ (Sports Network) - Ka'Deem Carey had 154 total yards and four touchdowns to lead Arizona past No. 18 Oklahoma State, 59-38, on Saturday.Carey carried the ball 26 times for 126 yards and three touchdowns while adding 28 yards and a score on four receptions for the Wildcats (2-0), who earned a 24-17 overtime victory over Toledo in their season opener.
Matt Scott completed 28-of-41 passes for 320 yards and two touchdowns in the victory. Austin Hill added 124 yards on five receptions.
Wes Lunt threw for 436 yards and four touchdowns on 37-of-60 passing for Oklahoma State (1-1), but also had three interceptions.
Tracy Moore caught eight balls for 106 yards and four touchdowns, while Joseph Randle had 123 yards on 23 carries for the Cowboys, who were coming off an 84-0 decision over Savannah State last Saturday.
Oklahoma State jumped out to an early lead on the opening possession of the game as Randle's 14-yard run on a 3rd-and-12 kept the drive alive before Moore capped the 8-play, 61-yard march with a 9-yard touchdown reception.
Arizona moved down to the Cowboys' 36-yard line on its first touch of the contest, but the Wildcats opted to go for it on a 4th-and-16 and Scott's pass intended for Hill fell incomplete.
Oklahoma took advantage of the failed attempt with a 7-play drive, which Lunt finished off with a 30-yard pass to Moore for a 14-0 lead near the midpoint of the first quarter.
But the rest of the half belonged to the Wildcats, who scored the game's next 30 points.
The comeback started on Arizona's ensuing drive as a pair of 15-yard personal foul penalties on the Cowboys moved the ball across midfield before Scott hit Richard Morrison for a 15-yard touchdown to get the Wildcats on the board.
A Randle fumble two plays later was recovered by Arizona at the Oklahoma State 29, resulting in John Bonano's 22-yard field goal.
Bonano connected on kicks of 46 and 24 yards on the Wildcats' next two possessions to go on top, 16-14, as OSU's offense failed to record a first down.
The Cowboys' offense found some traction on their next possession, converting a 3rd-and-4 with a 10-yard rush by Randle, but Justin Gilbert was stuffed on a 4th-and-1 at the 50-yard line to turn the ball over on downs.
After the teams traded punts, Scott completed passes of 11, 21 and 10 yards during a 10-play, 66-yard march that was capped by a Carey 1-yard rumble across the goal line with a little more than three minutes remaining in the half.
Oklahoma State then moved down to the Arizona 29-yard line, but Jared Tevis intercepted a Lunt pass to keep it a 23-14 game at the break.
The Wildcats' offense kept rolling in the third quarter as Carey ended a 13- play, 75-yard scoring drive with a 13-yard TD reception before the Cowboys were finally able to answer with their own 75-yard drive Moore finished with a 9-yard catch.
Jeremy Smith's 10-yard run into the end zone on Oklahoma State's next touch closed the gap to 30-28 with less than five minutes left in the third quarter, but Arizona was able to regain some cushion when Hill's 44-yard reception set up an 8-yard TD run by Scott.
Quinn Sharp's 25-yard field goal made it a 37-31 game entering the fourth quarter.
The Cowboys started their first drive of the fourth at the Arizona 15-yard line following a punt and Lunt connected on passes of 20 and 12 yards to Josh Stewart and Isaiah Anderson, respectively, to move the ball near midfield before Jonathan McKnight returned an interception 48 yards for a touchdown to stretch Arizona's lead back up to 45-31 after a successful two-point conversion.
The teams traded punts from there until Tevis grabbed his second interception of the game and returned it 32 yards to the OSU 33, resulting in Carey's 25- yard scamper into the end zone to give Arizona a 21-point lead with less than five minutes left in the game.
Moore's 22-yard touchdown catch and Carey's one-yard score finalized the scoring.
