Sooners roll over Florida A&M
Sep 9, 2012 - 3:49 AM Norman, OK (Sports Network) - Damien Williams rushed for 156 yards and four touchdowns and No. 5 Oklahoma rolled over Florida A&M, 69-13.Landry Jones completed 19-of-28 passes for 252 yards with two touchdowns and an interception for the Sooners (2-0), who were coming off a 24-7 win at UTEP in the season opener.
Kenny Stills had 10 catches for 120 yards and a score on Saturday, while Brennan Clay rushed for 62 yards and a pair of touchdowns on eight carries.
"A lot of guys made plays," said Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops. "Damien Williams again had a big night."
Damien Fleming threw for 133 yards on 11-of-21 passing with a touchdown and an interception for the Rattlers (0-2), who compete in the Football Championship Subdivision's Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference. They lost to Tennessee State in the season-opener
Travis Harvey finished with 118 yards and a score on four catches, while James Owens and Eddie Rocker paced the rushing attack with 35 and 34 yards, respectively.
"Bob has done a great job of recruiting," said Florida A&M coach Joe Taylor. "Landry is for real. He was accurate and he does a great job of buying time. He slides in the pocket."
Williams accounted for each of Oklahoma's first three scores, as the Sooners jumped out to an early 21-3 lead.
The junior running back capped a 67-yard drive with a short touchdown plunge for the game's first points, then rushed four yards for a score after Justin Brown's 43-yard punt return.
"I thought Justin Brown was great," continued Stoops.
Florida A&M got on the board early in the second quarter courtesy of Chase Varnadore's 41-yard field goal, but the Sooners answered with a quick scoring drive, which was highlighted by a 51-yard completion from Jones to Brown and capped by a 15-yard touchdown scamper by Williams.
Stills added a 16-yard touchdown reception for a 28-3 lead before the Rattlers found the end zone on Fleming's 75-yard pass to Harvey.
"The defense was really good except for one play," explained Stoops. "That's another area where we need to do a better job."
The Sooners ended the first half with an 11-play, 87-yard march to go ahead 35-10. Jones capped the drive with an 18-yard touchdown pass to Trey Metoyer.
The second half was no different, as Oklahoma opened the third quarter with 21 straight points.
Clay accounted for the final 38 yards of the Sooner's opening drive and found the end zone from three yards out on his fourth consecutive carry.
After a Florida A&M three-and-out, Williams exploded for an 89-yard touchdown run.
"Damien is a strong, powerful guy with excellent speed, so it's exciting to see him play the way he is," said Stoops. "I thought the guys in front of him did a nice job of creating some space."
Clay followed with a 10-yard scoring run to cap a quick, 74-yard drive as the Sooners grabbed 56-10 lead near the midway point of the third quarter.
The Rattlers' only points of the second half came on their ensuing possession when Tyler Bass completed passes of 13 and 11 yards during a 51-yard march, which was capped by Varnadore's 46-yard field goal.
In the fourth quarter, Dominique Whaley had a four-yard touchdown run and Roy Finch added a 15-yard scoring scamper to seal the final result.
