No. 17 Sooners topple previously unbeaten Texas Tech

Oct 7, 2012 - 1:02 AM Lubbock, TX (Sports Network) - Landry Jones threw for two touchdowns and Blake Bell added two scores on the ground as the 17th-ranked Oklahoma Sooners steamrolled the Texas Tech Red Raiders, 41-20, to earn their first Big 12 victory of the season.

Jones completed 25-of-40 passes for 259 yards and connected with Justin Brown and Kenny Stills for scores. Bell took two 1-yard carries into the end zone for touchdowns as Oklahoma (3-1, 1-1 Big 12) rebounded nicely off its bye week following a 24-19 loss to Kansas State on Sept. 22.

"I thought the receivers played really physical today, did a good job," Jones said. "Tech kind of pressed a little bit more, and I think the guys did a really good job, playing physical and being where they were supposed to be and being precise."

Seth Doege led Texas Tech to a victory over Oklahoma last season, but struggled on Saturday and was unable to replicate the same result. Doege finished 22-of-36 for 203 yards and was intercepted three times, with his third returned by Javon Harris for a score that put the game out of reach for the Red Raiders (4-1, 1-1), who were denied a 5-0 start for the second consecutive season.

"Obviously a disappointment," said Texas Tech head coach Tommy Tuberville. "If you look at it, we didn't have much of a rushing game. Your rushing game has to be a lot better against a team like this to give yourself an opportunity to run and pass."

SaDale Foster and Kenny Williams each ran for a score for Texas Tech, but were limited on the ground. Foster ran for 44 yards on 11 carries while Williams rushed seven times for 24 yards.

Texas Tech trailed just 24-13 at halftime, but its first two possessions of the second half stalled and led to Oklahoma touchdowns.

Doege led the Red Raiders to the Oklahoma 36 on their first touch, but his pass on 3rd-and-5 fell incomplete. Texas Tech then decided to go for it on fourth down and Doege was sacked for a 10-yard loss.

Oklahoma took over on its own 46-yard line and Jones completed a 38-yard pass to Damien Williams to move the Sooners inside the Red Raiders' 20. Four running plays later, Bell scored on a 1-yard rush.

On the Red Raiders following possession, Doege was picked off by Harris, who ran 46 yards to the end zone for a score to give the Sooners a 38-13 advantage.

Oklahoma tacked on three more points with a 42-yard field goal from Mike Hunnicutt in the final minute of the third quarter, and Foster ran for a score with less than a minute to play for Texas Tech to account for the final margin.

Both teams opened up the game with first-possession touchdowns.

Oklahoma moved down the field and to the Texas Tech 13-yard line after Jones completed a 17-yard pass to Damien Williams. Following two incompletions, Jones connected with Brown for a 13-yard score.

Texas Tech responded on the following drive. After crossing midfield, Doege completed a 35-yard pass to Darrin Moore to put the Red Raiders down inside the Sooners' 10. Two plays later, Kenny Williams crossed the goal line on a 7- yard rush to tie the game at 7-7.

The Red Raiders' next possession started at their own 4-yard line after Tress Way's punt for Oklahoma traveled 71 yards. Following Eric Stephens' 3rd-and-1 rush for a first down, Doege was intercepted by Jamarkus McFarland, who fumbled after Doege tackled him. Tyson Williams of Texas Tech recovered and the drive restarted from the 4-yard line.

Doege then led a 13-play march for the Red Raiders, completing passes of 19 yards to Omar Ontiveros, 10 yards to Javon Bell and 18 yards to Jace Amaro to set up Ryan Bustin for a 35-yard field goal early in the second quarter.

Oklahoma answered quickly on the ensuing possession. Jones completed passes to Damien Williams and Sterling Shepard before Dominique Whaley rushed for 18 yards to the Red Raiders' 1-yard line. On the next play, Blake Bell took the handoff for a score to give Oklahoma a 14-10 lead.

Bustin kicked a 43-yard field goal for Texas Tech on the following possession to bring the Red Raiders within a point, but Oklahoma scored a touchdown on its next touch.

Jones was perfect on the drive, completing all six of his passes. His fourth completion, a strike to Trey Millard for 25 yards, put Oklahoma inside the Red Raiders' 20, and his 13-yard strike to Stills three plays later gave the Sooners a 21-13 lead with 3:27 left in the first half.

After Aaron Colvin intercepted Doege on Texas Tech's next possession, Hunnicutt added three points for the Sooners with a 33-yard field goal before halftime.
