No. 11 Oklahoma State crushes No. 3 Baylor
Nov 24, 2013 - 6:57 AM Stillwater, OK (SportsNetwork.com) - Oklahoma State likely shattered Baylor's National Championship hopes Saturday night, as the 11th-ranked Cowboys throttled the third-ranked Bears, 49-17, at Boone Pickens Stadium.Clint Chelf completed 19-of-25 passes for 370 yards and three touchdowns and also rushed for a score, while Kye Staley added a pair of rushing touchdowns for the Cowboys (10-1, 7-1 Big 12), who have rattled off seven straight wins since falling to West Virginia on Sept. 28.
"He's been good the last few games in what we've asked him to do. We didn't feel like we had as much of an advantage with him running the football in this game with the way that Baylor lines up," Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy said of Chelf. "Obviously, that was true because he had nine carries for eight yards, but he was really effective in throwing the ball. He was accurate, and he made good decisions. I couldn't be more proud of what he's accomplished. He's been a good leader, and he's done it quietly. He's humble. He's had success."
Chelf also had a 48-yard reception and Tracy Moore finished with five catches for 126 yards and a touchdown.
Oklahoma State, which beat then-nationally ranked Texas on Nov. 16, now has the inside track to the Big 12 crown. The Cowboys will need either a win over No. 22 Oklahoma on Dec. 7 or a Baylor loss to either TCU or Texas to claim the conference's automatic BCS bowl bid.
Heisman candidate Bryce Petty completed just 28-of-48 passes for 359 yards and two touchdowns for the Bears (9-1, 6-1), who had won 13 straight games dating back to last season.
"(OSU) played extremely well, played with a lot of energy, made plays when they needed to make plays," said Baylor coach Art Briles. "We were not successful in our scoring opportunities. They made a few plays on us while we were on defense and they were on offense."
Shock Linwood, starting in place of an injured Lache Seastrunk, rushed for just 29 yards on 14 carries and fumbled twice in the setback.
After punting it away on their first drive, Baylor stood up Oklahoma State on 4th-and-1 from the Cowboys' 47.
Things went downhill quickly for the Bears from there, however.
Petty broke off a 27-yard rush around the left end on 3rd-and-2, but tripped over his own feet at the one with a clear path to the end zone. Two plays later, Linwood fumbled on the goal line as he attempted to stretch the ball into the end zone.
"You feel like things aren't going your way and it's not like those are freakish plays, those were normal every downs plays. So it wasn't like it was something out of the ordinary, we were shocked. It is something you come to expect to work opposite of what happened. That's a little disturbing not sure what to call those," Briles said.
Chelf then guided Oklahoma State the length of the field in seven plays, with Staley capping the march with a 2-yard touchdown plunge late in the first quarter. Earlier in the drive, Chelf connected with Charlie Moore for 28 yards along the left sideline before finding Marcell Ateman for a 51-yard catch-and- run that got the ball inside the Baylor 20.
Oklahoma State added to its lead late in the second quarter when Chelf found Charlie Moore for a 12-yard score. After a 37-yard completion to Jhajuan Seales on the first play of the possession, Chelf found Brandon Sheperd for a 25-yard gain on 3rd-and-4 to keep the abbreviated drive alive. On the next play, Moore found an opening behind a pair of Baylor defenders and hauled in Chelf's toss for the score.
After trading punts, Petty led the Bears down the field for a 29-yard Aaron Jones field goal in the closing seconds of the first half. A 53-yard completion to Clay Fuller sparked the march and Linwood picked up 10 yards on the next play. However, a pair of Petty incompletions and an 8-yard pass to Antwan Goodley forced Baylor to take the points and a 14-3 deficit at the break.
The Cowboys wasted no time extending the lead in the second half, as Chelf was able to find Tracy Moore, who shook a tackler and raced for a 56-yard touchdown just four plays into the third quarter to make it 21-3.
Baylor then drove down to the Oklahoma State 20-yard line, but Linwood was brought down for no gain on 4th-and-4 and the Cowboys took over.
Oklahoma State needed just six plays to find the end zone again thanks to Chelf's 48-yard reception. The quarterback tossed the ball to Josh Stewart near the line of scrimmage and flanked back to the left sideline, where Stewart threw the ball back to Chelf before he followed a caravan of blockers down the sideline prior to being pushed out at the five.
Two plays later, Staley bulled his way over a Baylor defender and into the end zone for a 28-3 lead.
It appeared that Baylor got back into the game later in the third quarter, as Petty connected with Goodley for a long touchdown pass. However, the score was negated after Goodley was penalized for illegally touching the ball on the play. The Bears eventually turned it over on downs, and Chelf ran it in from four yards out six plays later for a 35-3 lead.
Baylor finally found the end zone early in the fourth, when Petty went back to Goodley for a 24-yard touchdown to make it a three-possession game.
The Bears looked poised to chip away at their deficit after forcing a three- and-out and driving down to the Cowboys' 2-yard line, but the ensuing snap sailed over Petty's head and squirted away as the quarterback attempted to pounce on the ball. OSU's Tyler Patmon scooped up the loose ball and returned it 78 yards for the final dagger.
Chelf's third touchdown pass of the game, a 33-yarder to Seales, made it 49-10 with 3:01 left. Petty hooked up with Norwood for a 32-yard score with 1:59 remaining to account for the final difference.
"Our crowd was a factor, and our players played very well. I can't say enough about our team. We have a lot of work ahead of us, but I'm very proud of what our team accomplished tonight," said Gundy.
