Oklahoma State rips through Iowa State thanks to 4 TDs from Roland
Oct 26, 2013 - 10:18 PM Ames, IA (SportsNetwork.com) - Oklahoma State had its perfect season undone at Jack Trice Stadium two years ago. This time around, the 19th-ranked Cowboys rode Desmond Roland to the tune of 219 yards and four touchdowns to put a 58-27 hurting on the already-struggling Iowa State Cyclones.
Roland's effort on the ground, along with two defensive touchdowns, made up for a subpar showing from Clint Chelf, who completed just 10-of-26 passes for 78 yards and a touchdown in windy conditions.
The Cowboys (6-1, 3-1 Big 12) have won three in a row on the heels of their lone loss at West Virginia, while Iowa State (1-6, 0-4) has dropped four straight and remains winless in Big 12 play.
Grant Rohach took over under center after Sam B. Richardson suffered a head injury in the second quarter, and the freshman quarterback threw a touchdown pass to Quenton Bundrage to pull the Cyclones within 28-20 at halftime.
But Iowa State, which was coming off an embarrassing 71-7 loss at Baylor, couldn't get anything going in the second half, amassing just 99 yards after a 247-yard showing in the first 30 minutes.
Oklahoma State scored 21 straight points in the first 9:15.
"I give a lot of credit to Oklahoma State for coming out fast and executing very well," Iowa State head coach Paul Rhoads said.
Roland, who more than doubled his production over the first six games, ran from two yards out for a touchdown to cap a 10-play, 58-yard drive, Justin Gilbert returned an interception 31 yards for a score and Charlie Moore jumped over a defender for a highlight-reel 8-yard touchdown catch.
Iowa State got on the board with 2:58 left in the first quarter when Bundrage ran a fade route and caught Richardson's 22-yard pass in the end zone.
Roland countered with a 6-yard touchdown run on the first play of the second quarter, and Iowa State inched closer heading into the break.
DeVondrick Nealy scored on an option to the left from 11 yards out, soaring over a defender at the goal line. Richardson galloped for 51 yards to set up the TD but left during the next series after taking a hit to the back of the head. He finished with 95 yards on 6-of-15 passing.
Rohach led the Cyclones to points on his first drive as Bundrage made a juggling catch in the back of the end zone while falling to his back. The extra point was blocked following the 20-yard TD.
The Cowboys put the game out of reach with 24 straight points out of the break.
Ben Grogan made it a two-possession game, 31-20, with a 22-yard field goal in the third quarter, and Roland rumbled 58 yards for a touchdown near the midway point.
"We ran that play numerous times throughout the game, and it was working well. Once I broke it, I saw the safety and said to myself 'I can't let him tackle me,' so I broke his tackle," recalled Roland.
Ernst Brun was stripped on the ensuing drive near midfield, and Tyler Johnson picked up the loose ball at his own 46-yard line and used a convoy of blockers down the left sideline en route to another defensive score.
Roland put an exclamation point on his big day with a 3-yard TD run early in the fourth, and Jeff Woody, who scored the deciding touchdown in double overtime to knock off the 10-0 Cowboys two years ago, went in from a yard out to account for Iowa State's only points in the second half.
Jeremy Smith's 1-yard plunge over the goal line provided the final margin.
Game Notes
Roland came in with 147 yards on 36 carries. He was the first Oklahoma State running back to break the 200-yard mark since Kendall Hunter did so in 2010 .... Rohach completed 12-of-23 passes for 97 yards.
