Chelf stars as Oklahoma State trips up Texas Tech

Nov 3, 2013 - 6:26 AM Lubbock, TX (SportsNetwork.com) - Clint Chelf passed for two touchdowns and ran for two more, as 18th-ranked Oklahoma State outlasted No. 15 Texas Tech, 52- 34, in a Big 12 scorefest on Saturday.

Chelf ended up completing 18 of his 34 passes for 211 yards but made them count, also racking up 88 yards on six carries for the Cowboys (7-1, 4-1 Big 12), who have won four in a row and vaulted over their foes in the conference standings.

Desmond Roland paced the rushing attack with 96 yards and three scores on 31 carries, with Tracy Moore and Jeremy Seaton picking up a TD reception each.

"We were good on offense. We were good on defense, and good in special teams. So I was proud of our team," Oklahoma State head coach Mike Gundy said.

Webb Davis let fly 71 times, completing 45 for 425 yards and two touchdowns for the Red Raiders (7-2, 4-2), who have allowed 90 points in back-to-back losses to Oklahoma-based programs after winning seven straight to open the season.

Jace Amaro led all players with 174 yards on 15 receptions, Eric Ward added 86 yards on eight grabs, with each player hauling in a TD pass from Davis. Kenny Williams picked up a rushing score and Pete Robertson returned a Chelf pass for another score in defeat.

Ahead by only four, the visitors re-asserted themselves at the outset of the second half, scoring twice with a span of 2:08, taking a 42-24 advantage after a 3-yard rush from Roland and a surprising long TD run from Chelf.

The former was set up by the Cowboys' defense forcing a three-and-out and a 46-yard punt return from Josh Stewart to the Texas Tech 11, while the latter was capped when Chelf called his own number on 3rd-and-9 and didn't stop until he collected a 67-yard score.

Davis struck back on a 1-yard pass to Amaro, but Chelf did it himself one more time before the quarter elapsed, hitting the end zone on an 8-yard rush to give Oklahoma State a 49-31 lead.

Both sides traded field goals early in the final quarter. Ryan Bustin's 26- yarder pulled the Raiders within 15 points, but Ben Grogan made his 41-yard attempt.

Texas Tech punted, then turned the ball over on downs after Williams was stuffed for a loss on 4th-and-goal. The hosts' final series ended on Davis' incompletion on 4th-and-18 from the OSU 22.

"I thought we had good momentum going into the locker room and then came out really flat and didn't play well in the second half," Texas Tech coach Kliff Kingsbury said.

OSU picked up the game's first score, on its second possession as Chelf hit Moore for a 6-yard touchdown.

The Cowboys took a 14-0 edge after Roland plunged in from the one, then it was a 21-0 margin after another 1-yard run to paydirt by Roland. The latter score was made possible by Derek Branson's block of a Ryan Erxleben punt which gave OSU the ball on the opposing 15-yard line.

Texas Tech finally got on track with a 32-yard field goal from Bustin, then closed its gap to 21-10 on the first play of the second quarter after Webb found Ward open for a 38-yard score.

OSU forged ahead by a 28-10 count when Chelf found Seaton for a touchdown on 4th-and-goal from the one, but the hosts stormed back after coming up short on their ensuing series. Robertson stepped in front of a Chelf pass and rolled 21 yards to the end zone for a 28-17 contest.

The Raiders pulled within four as Williams took it in from the two just ahead of the two-minute warning.
