UCLA seals win with sixth interception

Oct 4, 2013 - 11:36 AM Salt Lake City, UT (SportsNetwork.com) - So much for not being able to force turnovers.

The UCLA defense intercepted Utah quarterback Travis Wilson six times in the 12th-ranked Bruins' 34-27 triumph over the Utes on Thursday.

The Bruins, who had only three takeaways coming into the game, picked Wilson off for the final time with 24 seconds remaining and the Utes driving for a potential game-tying score at the UCLA 23-yard line.

"We came up with some plays on defense, got some stops on defense," UCLA head coach Jim Mora said.

Brett Hundley was 17-of-27 for 211 yards with a touchdown and an interception and ran for 85 yards and a score on 20 carries for the Bruins (4-0, 1-0 Pac-12), who are 4-0 for the first time since 2005.

Paul Perkins carried the ball 16 times for 92 yards, Jordan Payton caught three passes for 68 yards and a touchdown and Anthony Barr tallied two sacks in the triumph.

Wilson finished 22-of-44 for 288 yards and two touchdowns for Utah (3-2, 0-2), which was coming off a Sept. 21 victory against BYU.

"When you're minus-five in the turnover margin, especially against a team the caliber of UCLA, you're not going to win," Utah head coach Kyle Wittingham said.

Dres Anderson hauled in six receptions for 106 yards and a touchdown, while Sean Fitzgerald brought in five balls for 53 yards and a score in defeat.

After Keith McGill's 19-yard interception return for a touchdown tied the game at 24-24 early in the fourth, the Bruins rattled off 10 straight points to seemingly take a comfortable margin.

Ka'imi Fairbairn nailed a 47-yard field goal to cap UCLA's ensuing 13-play, 48-yard sequence.

Anthony Jefferson intercepted Wilson later in the frame to give the Bruins the ball at the Utah 40-yard line and Hundley scampered untouched for a 36-yard score three plays later to make it 34-24 with 3:33 left.

Andy Phillips booted through a 37-yard field goal to get the Utes within a score with just over two minutes to go and they recovered the ensuing onside kick.

Myles Jack, though, secured the victory for the Bruins with the interception.

Earlier, after Jordon James concluded a 10-play, 68-yard drive with a 1-yard TD plunge on UCLA's opening drive of the game, the Utes put up the next 14.

Wilson hit Anderson for a 54-yard score on Utah's first touch of the game and then flipped a 6-yard TD pass to Fitzgerald later in the first to give the Utes a 14-7 edge after a quarter of play.

Lined up in the left slot, wide receiver Devin Fuller took a handoff from Hundley and then hit him for a 7-yard touchdown to cap a 9-play, 80-yard trek early in the second to tie the tilt at 14-14.

Randall Goforth intercepted Wilson on Utah's next series, which led to a Payton 17-yard TD reception to give UCLA a 21-14 edge.

The Utes then answered with a field goal as Phillips split the uprights from 44 yards out midway through the frame.

UCLA took a 21-17 lead into the break and Fairbairn nailed a 33-yard field goal early in the third to make it a one-score spread.
