TCU regains form in rout of Oklahoma State

Oct 19, 2014 - 5:39 AM Fort Worth, TX ( - Trevone Boykin threw for a career-high 410 yards with three touchdowns as No. 12 TCU crushed 15th-ranked Oklahoma State, 42-9, to end the Cowboys' eight-game win streak against teams from Texas.

Boykin completed 26-of-39 passes and gained 41 yards on the ground for TCU (5-1, 2-1 Big 12), which coughed up a 21-point fourth-quarter lead against Baylor last week to suffer its first loss of the season. The Horned Frogs got back on track in a big way in this one, outgaining the Cowboys 676-258.

"Leaders on our team pick guys up during the week," Boykin said. "We knew that taste we had in our mouth after the Baylor game. We made a promise to our team and ourselves that we really don't want that anymore. So we just came out today and played four quarters."

B.J. Catalon carried 10 times for 102 yards and a pair of touchdowns, giving the 5-foot-9 running back three straight multi-touchdown games. He has scored on the ground at least once in all six games this season.

Josh Doctson hauled in early touchdown passes of 77 and 84 yards from Boykin, finishing with seven grabs for a career-high 225 yards in the rout.

Daxx Garman and the Cowboys were bottled up by a TCU defense that allowed 61 points a week ago. Garman completed just 10-of-25 attempts for 132 yards and two interceptions as Oklahoma State (5-2, 3-1) saw its five-game win streak following a Week 1 loss to Florida State come to an end.

"Offensively we couldn't make plays, we ran the ball a little bit better today but we didn't protect," OSU coach Mike Gundy said. "We never could get out of a jam. We played a better football team, they're definitely a better football team no question."

Garman was intercepted by Kevin White on the second Cowboys possession and TCU quickly converted the turnover into points. Boykin hit Deante' Gray for 14 yards before Catalon busted through the line for a 34-yard touchdown on his first carry of the game.

On the first play of TCU's next possession, Boykin faked a handoff to Catalon and fired a strike to Doctson, who caught it in stride and sprinted 77 yards to the end zone to give the hosts a 14-0 lead midway through the first quarter.

Ben Grogan was pure with a 30-yard field goal to put the Cowboys on the board, but the Boykin-Doctson connection struck again less than a minute later. On 2nd-and-9 from the TCU 16, Boykin hit his receiver at his highest point near the right sideline, and Doctson saw nothing but daylight when he landed after two OSU secondary players bumped into one another trying to defend the pass.

Garman led the Cowboys into the red zone on consecutive drives early in the second quarter, but both times the Horned Frogs kept them out of the end zone. Grogan finished both with a pair of short field goals to cut the margin to 21-9.

A fourth-down gamble late in the first half then paid off for TCU. On 4th- and-1 from the OSU 35, Catalon took a handoff and patiently waited for blocks before bursting down the right sideline for his second touchdown of the game.

Jaden Oberkrom missed a 48-yard field goal wide right in the closing seconds of the half, but TCU still owned a 28-9 lead at intermission.

Gray made a diving 22-yard TD reception in the back left corner of the end zone early in the third quarter, and TCU's Aaron Green muscled his way in from four yards out late in the period to cap the scoring, as neither team managed any points in the fourth.
