Abdullah MVP as North tops South

Jan 25, 2015 - 4:14 AM Mobile, AL (SportsNetwork.com) - Nebraska running back Ameer Abdullah was named MVP of the Senior Bowl after running for 73 yards and catching four passes for 40 yards as the North topped the South 34-13 on Saturday.

Yale's Tyler Varga ran for a pair of touchdowns and the North rushed for 186 yards as a team with Minnesota's David Cobb adding 69 and scoring a touchdown. Varga delivered a key block on Cobb's score.

Baylor's Bryce Petty had a game-high 123 passing yards for the North, but also threw an interception. Oregon State's Sean Mannion threw a touchdown pass for the North and Southeastern Louisiana QB Bryan Bennett was picked off twice for the South.

Northern Iowa's star running back David Johnson scored the South's only touchdown on a 19-yard run while Auburn's Cameron Artis-Payne entertained local fans with 43 yards on the ground and 35 receiving yards.

Miami receiver Phillip Dorsett was unable to play due to an injury, and Auburn's Sammie Coates left the game early with an injury.

The nation's sack leader, Nate Orchard of Utah, did not record any sacks, but he was among the game's leading tacklers with five stops for the North. Washington star Danny Shelton also recorded five for the North, as did Auburn quarterback-turned-cornerback Nick Marshall of the South team.

Quinten Rollins, completing his first season on the gridiron since high school after a successful career as the Miami RedHawks' point guard, intercepted a pass.

The South scored its only touchdown of the game on the first drive. Johnson made two cuts to avoid defenders and ran through a tackle on his way to the end zone to cap the 10-play, 80-yard opening drive.

Concordia kicker Tom Obarski's field goal got the North on the board the next possession, but the North squad did not find the end zone until the second quarter when Mannion found Notre Dame tight end Ben Koyack in the flat for a 10-yard score.

Alabama's QB Blake Sims led a 10-play, 73-yard drive that resulted in no points due to a missed field goal. The North failed to score before halftime when time ran out after Abdullah was tackled on a catch short of the goal line.

Justin Manton from Louisiana Monroe kicked a field goal early in the third quarter to tie the game, but the North scored the next 17 points to open up a lead. Obarski's field goal the following drive put the North in front, and Bennett's first interception set up Cobb's 4-yard score late in the quarter.

Varga's first touchdown run on the first drive of the fourth put the North up 27-10. The South reached the red zone on its first possession of the final quarter but failed to punch the ball into the end zone. Varga's second score later in the quarter wrapped the game up.
