Auburn, Nebraska make rare Cotton Bowl appearances

DALLAS (Ticker) -- Many members of Auburn's football team were not even born the last time the Tigers played in the Cotton Bowl. Nobody on Nebraska's squad was when the Cornhuskers last participated.

Auburn and Nebraska make rare appearances in the Cotton Bowl when the teams match up on Monday.

Auburn has not played in the Cotton Bowl since January 1, 1986, when the Tigers lost to Texas A&M, 36-16.

Nebraska's last appearance in the contest came on January 1, 1980, when the Cornhuskers fell to Houston, 17-14.

The Tigers (10-2) went 6-2 in the Southeastern Conference, finishing second in the West Division. Both of their defeats were blowouts at home, to SEC West champ Arkansas and Georgia.

The Cornhuskers (9-4) won the Big 12 Conference North Division with a 6-2 league mark before absorbing a 21-7 loss to South champion Oklahoma in the conference title game. This will be their 31st all-time January bowl game but first on New Year's Day since a win over Miami in the 1995 Orange bowl.

Nebraska is 3-0 against Auburn. The teams last met in 1982, when the Cornhuskers posted a 41-7 road win.
