Cal Poly-SLO beats Humboldt State 23-17

Sep 5, 2010 - 5:12 AM SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif.(AP) -- Quarterback Tony Smith threw for a touchdown and ran for another to lead Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo past Humboldt State 23-17 on Saturday night.

Smith connected on 6 of 12 passes for 39 yards, but it was his 48-yard scoring dash late in the third quarter that put the Mustangs (1-0) on top for good.

Slotback Mark Rodgers ran for 106 yards and a touchdown and pulled down Smith's scoring pass in the second quarter.

The Luberjacks (0-1) were up 17-7 at halftime thanks to an 8-yard pass from Mike Proulx to Dirk Dallas late in the first quarter, a 40-yard field goal by Matt Bruder in the second and a 29-yard fumble recovery and run by Jonathan Faraimo just before the break.

After coming back in the second half, the Mustangs topped of their victory with a safety by James Chen with about eight minutes left.
