Stephens-Howling, Pittsburgh run past Syracuse

Oct 7, 2006 - 8:29 PM SYRACUSE, New York (Ticker) -- Syracuse simply was unable to stop LaRod Stephens-Howling.

Stephens-Howling more than doubled his career high by running for 221 yards and a touchdown as Pittsburgh posted a 21-11 Big East Conference victory over the Orange.

A sophomore whose previous best effort was a 101-yard performance against Syracuse last year, Stephens-Howling averaged 8.2 yards on 27 carries for the Panthers (5-1, 2-0 Big East), who have won four of five in the series.

Pitt held just a 7-3 lead before Stephens-Howling scampered for a 70-yard touchdown with 6:28 to go in the first half.

Tyler Palko, who opened the scoring on a four-yard run early in the first quarter, made it 21-3 with a one-yard TD toss to Steve Buches with 2:31 left in the third period.

Syracuse (3-3, 0-1) made the score more respectable on Perry Patterson's 29-yard TD strike to Mike Williams with 4:05 to play. The duo also hooked up on the ensuing two-point conversion.

Palko completed 20-of-24 passes for 177 yards. Patterson went 20-of-29 for 225 yards but was sacked five times.
