Grothe runs South Florida past Connecticut

Oct 8, 2006 - 3:21 AM TAMPA, Florida (Ticker) -- South Florida quarterback Matt Grothe had a big day, and Connecticut paid for it.

Grothe had three touchdown runs and the Bulls rushed for 205 yards en route to a 38-16 Big East Conference victory over the Huskies.

The Bulls took command early, taking a 14-0 lead in the first quarter on Grothe's 16-yard TD scamper and Benjamin Williams' 13-yard scoring run.

Grothe scored twice more in the third quarter as the Bulls pulled away. His second TD came on an eight-yard run and his third touchdown was a six-yarder that gave USF a 28-9 lead.

Williams led the Bulls (4-2, 1-1 Big East) with 110 yards on 22 carries, while Grothe rushed 15 times for 87 yards. He also completed 12-of-15 passes for 146 yards and a touchdown.

Matt Bonislawski went 20-of-40 for 201 yards and a touchdown for the Huskies (2-3, 0-1), who gained just 60 yards on the ground.
