Backup Cowan passes UCLA to victory over Arizona

Oct 8, 2006 - 5:03 AM PASADENA, California (Ticker) -- UCLA did not miss a beat when Ben Olson went down with an injury.

Patrick Cowan threw a pair of first-half touchdowns as the Bruins cruised past Arizona, 27-7, in a Pac-10 Conference contest.

Olson sprained his left knee in the first quarter but UCLA's offense did not suffer behind Cowan, who completed 20-of-29 passes for 201 yards.

Cowan opened the scoring with a seven-yard TD toss to Marcus Everett with 1:59 left in the first quarter.

Arizona (2-4, 0-3 Pac-10) tied the contest on a 10-yard pass from Adam Austin to Mike Thomas with 8:41 to go in the second quarter, but Cowan countered with a 15-yard TD strike to Matt Willis just over a minute later to give the Bruins (4-1, 2-1) the lead for good.

Justin Medlock added a pair of field goals in the third quarter before Al Verner iced the contest with an 89-yard interception return for a score late in the fourth.

Austin went 15-of-30 for 192 yards, a touchdown and an interception after starter Willie Tuitama went down with an injury.
